Indonesia United

Another black mark for the city today as JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton, two prominent hotels in the Mega Kuningan district of Jakarta were bombed.

@danieltumiwa was the first to report the blast as he was at Ritz Carlton this morning when he heard and felt the explosion at JW Marriott minutes before Ritz Carlton itself was shook by another bomb. His tweet was ahead of the media by a good 20 minutes. He was about to have a breakfast meeting on the 26th floor when the explosions occurred and had to leave the building immediately.

He told me over the phone that the scene at the lobby was utter chaos as smoke and debris covered the entire floor. While he himself was uninjured, many others were not so lucky. Reports up to this moment say 9 dead and more than 50 others injured. Daniel will have to go back to Ritz Carlton later to pick up his bike. Unsure how if at all, that is possible today given the heightened security at the scene.

First pictures after the explosions were posted by Galuh Riyadi via Twitpic. While Andre Siregar who was staying at the Ritz on the 11th floor posted this picture of from outside of the Ritz's restaurant showing the area in shreds

Manchester United who was set to play the Indonesian All Stars on Monday at Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta issued a statement to the press canceling their visit and considering to move the match to Kuala Lumpur

The President made an official statement on TV from outside the hotels not too long ago in which he claimed that this attack was politically motivated and aimed at destabilizing the nation's political, social, and economical status.

It was six years ago when the same JW Marriott was bombed killing 12 people, mostly Indonesians. The attack back then was claimed by Jemaah Islamiyah but this time no one has come forward and claimed responsibility.

While it may not be the time for Manchester United to visit Indonesia, it is time for Indonesia United.

Yesterday's election photos

Voters mark their fingers after casting their ballot.

Empty polling station around 11 am.

Purple ink disappeared after 2 minutes of water and soap.

Results from four different survey agencies. Incumbent president in the middle with his new running mate.

Why the president won reelection

My wife overheard a conversation today that perhaps was said in a humorous tone but it could well be the reason why Yudhoyono, presidential candidate number two of three, won by a landslide.

About 60% of the national votes went to the Yudhoyono + Boediono pair and they won in 24 out of 33 provinces based on the quick count method.

The guy said, "number one, you open the ballot paper, number two, you mark it, number three, you fold it back."

I just sat there with my jaw on the floor.

Viva, Fox, and the Democrats

Was just checking out Fox Indonesia's website and read the profile of its big guns.

I can say most people who pay attention to these things would know about it already but if you haven't, check out the profiles. Yes, Fox Indonesia is run by the Mallarangeng brothers, probably the biggest family name in Indonesian politics right now.

Andi is the President's spokesperson and senior consultant in the company, Rizal pretended to run for president but now bats for the (Indonesian) Democrats, and less publicly known Choel is the CEO.

This firm that advises the Democrats has a CEO who runs a news portal that is part of a media group that happens to be partially owned by the Star TV network which is part of a media empire better known as Fox.

Am I stretching it? :D

If it's all too serious for ya, check out this page. By the way, Jasmine Valentine kind of looks like this guy.

update: One Google search later revealed Rizal also runs the group's news portal as President Commissioner. 'Scuse me for forgetting this 6 month old tidbit.

The Case of Omni Hospital vs Prita Mulyasari

I have never before posted a blog entry about this issue simply because I prefer to stay away from serious issues in this blog and there are far better bloggers who are more familiar with the case than I though unfortunately I've lost track of them (if you have links to significant ones please post in the comments) but Brett pointed to a recent entry in the development of the case as the mother of two young children was set free.

Rob Baiton highlighted the fact that while it was wrong to have her jailed in the first place, the court that freed her has opened up a legal minefield which if pursued correctly and properly would throw a wrench into nearly every case where the decisions were made based on pending subsidiary legislations.

I can see how people might misunderstand Rob's position despite having already said the entire thing was wrong in the first place. The Tangerang district attorney's office and the district court were clearly wrong in incarcerating her without proper legal proceedings but the court that freed her used possibly the worst legal basis to let her go and the poor mother may not be truly free for a while yet.

This has the potential to go the distance.

Debate or Quiz show?

The fact that there are presidential and vice presidential debates for Indonesia's upcoming election is amazing. Each candidate is being made to show what they're worth, what they stand for, and how far. The problem is there are still clear signs of restraint from many sides and I'm not talking just about the candidates.

The moderator of last night's VP debate complained that he was being held by the rules of the debate from digging further into where each candidate stand. The whole thing was a joke. The debate did not happen at all, there was no VP debate, there was a Q&A session in which no counterpoint was made. Each candidate only had to answer the moderator's question, nothing more. No effort was made to argue a point made by other candidates.

What's funny was the aftermath. In the post Q&A session, both MetroTV and TV One held separate response sessions with representatives of each candidate. This was where the debate happened. Each rep defended to the death what their respective man was saying earlier. Nobody wanted to concede despite their candidates clearly diverting the questions on several occasions. It was more interesting watching the post-"debate" debate that the "debate" itself.
